Es ist ein zweistufiger Prozess, der von heterotrophen Bakterien ausgef\u00fchrt wird. Diese Bakterien verwenden Nitrat und Nitrit, um ein Substrat (typischerweise eine Kohlenstoffquelle) als Teil des Dissimilationsprozesses in Stickstoffgas umzuwandeln. Der Prozess findet unter anoxischen Bedingungen statt. Bei der terti\u00e4ren biologischen Denitrifikation verwenden die Bakterien in der Regel eine externe Kohlenstoffquelle (z. B.
