Tertiary filter refurbishment work completed at Great Glen STW, UKUK water utility Severn Trent is optimizing waste water treatment plants for further P removal. Aspart of this scheme the existing tertiary filter plant at Great Glen STW, constructed in 2018, wasrefurbished. Also the process set-up has been altered to optimize filter operations at varying processconditions. The work has been executed by Brightwork in close collaboration with MMB andAlphaPlus.The project goal is to remove phosphorus by inline tertiary dosing of coagulant, and meet the morestringent criteria for P and Fe in the final effluent. New purification technology for micropollutants removal looks promising Our research to remove micropollutants, such as medicine residues, and phosphorus in one reactor, has been picked by the Dutch radio broadcasting RTV Drenthe. I a short interview the backgrounds and drivers of the research are discussed. The pilot unit, consisting of a biologically enhanced granular activated carbon filter reactor, is in full operation at WwTW Emmen, the Netherlands. Regular samples are taken to determine the removal efficiencies for a large number of medicine residues. Also, eco-toxicity is monitored and a variety of other parameters, including phosphorus.     Link to the
New tertiary process to remove micropollutants and phosphate from municipal treated wastewater tested at WwTW Emmen A pilot plant has been started at the waste water treatment plant of Emmen, Waterschap Vechtstromen. This pilot study, called Bio-GAK, aims to find an affordable and sustainable solution for removing micropollutants from treated wastewater before the water is discharged into surface water.
