Het filter behandelt een klein deel van de warmwaterstroom, terugkerend van de productieprocessen. Het filtraat wordt teruggevoerd naar het koelwatercircuit, terwijl het continu vrijkomende waswater wordt afgevoerd naar de blowdown. Bypass-filtratie behandelt gewoonlijk 1 - 10% van de recirculerende stroom om doeltreffend te zijn.
