Coagulatie en flocculatie vinden plaats in opeenvolgende stappen die bedoeld zijn om de krachten te overwinnen die de zwevende deeltjes in het te behandelen water of afvalwater stabiliseren. Het coagulatieproces is een snel proces dat de afstotende krachten tussen deeltjes in het water destabiliseert. Na destabilisatie worden botsingen tussen deeltjes mogelijk. Kleine vlokken groeien vervolgens uit tot grotere vlokken door gebruik te maken van flocculanten die in flocculatiezones worden gedoseerd, en waarbij voldoende mengenergie wordt ingebracht. Deze grotere vlokken kunnen nu effectief worden verwijderd. Verschillende cruciale ontwerpparameters voor dit proces zijn daarbij van belang: de keuze van coagulanten (zoals primaire zouten, ijzer- of aluminiumzouten) en flocculanten (kationisch, anionisch). Coagulatie en flocculatie worden zowel in de water- als in de afvalwaterbehandeling toegepast. In de waterbehandeling is een veel voorkomende toepassing de verwijdering van troebelheid en kleur uit oppervlaktewaterbronnen.\u00a0<\/p>

De meest toegepaste coagulatie- en flocculatieopzet is gebaseerd op mechanisch mengen en roeren. Het ontwerp wordt bepaald door de energie-input, uitgedrukt in GT-waarden.
