Deze componenten zijn vaak aanwezig in concentraties die geen verdere verwerking toelaten, tenzij het water wordt behandeld. Er is een passende oplossing nodig om hiermee om te gaan.<\/p>\n<p>Bekende behandelingsmethoden maken gebruik van actieve kool. Dit heeft een nadeel: na verzadiging moet de koolstof worden geregenereerd of worden weggegooid.<\/p>\n<p>Biologische afbraak in een continu bewegend bed mediafilter wordt met succes toegepast om zowel mono- als polycyclische koolwaterstoffen om te zetten in onschadelijke componenten. De zuurstof die nodig is voor de groei van de biomassa wordt door middel van zuivere zuurstof of lucht in het filterbed gebracht. De biomassa groeit bovenop de zandkorrels. Het continue wasproces wordt zo geregeld dat de actieve biomassa binnen het systeem blijft. Daardoor bedraagt de equivalente slibretentietijd (SRT) ruim meer dan 10 dagen.<\/p>\n<p>In de praktijk zijn resultaten verkregen met monocyclische koolwaterstofconcentraties in de voeding van 500 - 1.000 \u00b5g\/l en polycyclische koolwaterstofconcentraties van 40 - 80 \u00b5g\/l. Filtraatconcentraties worden geregistreerd, meestal minder dan 5 \u00b5g\/l. Deze resultaten worden bereikt bij hydraulische retentietijden van slechts 10 - 20 minuten.<\/p>\n<p>Het proces genereert geen chemisch afval. De continue waswaterstroom bevat de overtollige biomassa en de vaste stoffen die in het filter zijn achtergebleven.
