De reden daarvoor is dat het het perfecte filtermedium is: inert, slijtvast, vrij van verontreinigingen, beschikbaar in een uniforme korrelgrootteverdeling en relatief goedkoop.<\/p><p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; punctuation-wrap: simple; text-autospace: none; vertical-align: baseline;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Filterzand dat wordt gebruikt in diepbedfilters, zoals continufilters, kan worden gewonnen uit twee bronnen: ofwel uit rivierbeddingen ofwel door mijnbouw. In continu-filters wordt de voorkeur gegeven aan kwartszand uit rivierbeddingen, omdat dit door het langdurige natuurlijke erosieproces perfect is afgerond. Aangezien het zand in een continufilter voortdurend naar beneden beweegt, bevordert het afgeronde zand een homogene beweging. Dit resulteert in betere filterprestaties.  Het rivierzand wordt uit het stroomgebied van de rivier gebaggerd en moet worden bewerkt voordat het kan worden gebruikt voor diepbedfiltratie. De verwerking bestaat uit het reinigen, drogen en zeven van de grondstof, om een product te verkrijgen dat aan een aantal kwaliteitscriteria voldoet.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; punctuation-wrap: simple; text-autospace: none; vertical-align: baseline;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">De specifieke dichtheid van filterzand is 2,6 ton\/m<sup>3<\/sup>, met een pori\u00ebnruimte of porositeit van 40%. Dit is ongeacht de vorm en de korrelgrootte. Dit betekent dat de schijnbare dichtheid van het filtermedium in een zandfilter gelijk is aan 1,6 ton\/m<sup>3<\/sup>.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; punctuation-wrap: simple; text-autospace: none; vertical-align: baseline;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Een belangrijke eigenschap van filterzand is de hardheid ervan. Hoe harder het materiaal, hoe beter het zijn vorm behoudt bij langdurige filtratiewerkzaamheden. De hardheidsschaal van Mohs voor mineralen wordt gebruikt om de hardheid van filtermedia te bepalen. De hardheid wordt uitgedrukt in een kwalitatieve ordinale schaal van 1 tot 10, die de krasweerstand van verschillende mineralen aangeeft door het vermogen van harder materiaal om zachter materiaal te bekrassen.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; punctuation-wrap: simple; text-autospace: none; vertical-align: baseline;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Nederlands rivierzand bestaat meestal uit 96% SiO<sub>2<\/sub> en 2% <\/span>Al<sub>2<\/sub>O<sub>3<\/sub> de gloeirest zou laag moeten zijn: &lt; <span lang=\"EN-US\">0.5%. Het zand<\/span> is<span lang=\"EN-US\"> gekenmerkt door 7 op de hardheidsschaal van Mohs. Een zandkorrel gebruikt voor filtratie<\/i><\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-91cfc3f elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"91cfc3f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Filterzandgrootte en -verdeling<\/h3>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-075e460 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"075e460\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>In een zandfilter wordt de korrelgrootteverdeling bepaald op basis van de toepassing en de vaste-stofbelastingen. In drinkwatertoepassingen wordt meestal een korrelgrootte van 0,6 - 1,3 mm gebruikt, terwijl in afvalwatertoepassingen 1,2 - 2,0 mm gebruikelijk is.<\/p><p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Als zand wordt geleverd in een gegarandeerd korrelgroottebereik, is de boven- en ondergrens van de korrelgrootte niet rotsvast. Als een korrelgroottebereik van 1,2 - 2,0 mm wordt besteld, zijn zowel de onder- als de bovengrens geschikt voor 10 gewicht% kleinere en 10 gewicht% grotere korrels.\u00a0<br \/><\/span><\/p><p class=\"MsoNormal translation-block\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Een andere belangrijke parameter, die het filterzand karakteriseert, is de uniformiteitsco\u00ebffici\u00ebnt of UC. Deze wordt gedefinieerd als een verhouding en wordt berekend als de grootteopening die net 60% van het zand doorlaat (d60 waarde) gedeeld door de grootteopening die net 10% van het zandmonster doorlaat (d10-waarde). Als de gelijkvormigheidsco\u00ebffici\u00ebnt lager is dan 1,5, betekent dit dat de zanddeeltjes qua grootte sterk op elkaar lijken. <\/span><\/p><p class=\"MsoNormal\">Voor diepbedfiltratie moet de uniformiteitsco\u00ebffici\u00ebnt tussen 1,3 en 1,5 liggen om gelaagdheid van het filterbed tijdens het terugspoelen te voorkomen. Een lagere waarde van de co\u00ebffici\u00ebnt is mogelijk, maar dit leidt tot hogere zeefkosten en levert weinig extra voordeel op. In een continu zandfilter is dit stratificatieprobleem niet relevant omdat de zandwasprocedure heel anders is en het medium niet wordt ge\u00ebxpandeerd.\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-74c43af elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"74c43af\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"><p><b>Filterzand in een continu filter<br><\/b><\/p>\n\n<\/h3>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b948517 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"b948517\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Zodra de filtertank met zand is gevuld (met behulp van big bags of met behulp van een bulkcarrier, waarbij het zand wordt ingeblazen) en het filter operationeel is, ziet het zandbed eruit als aangegeven in de dwarsdoorsnede. In het midden van het filter bevindt zich de verticale luchtlift, bovenaan de wasinstallatie en onderaan de tank de verdelerarmen, die het filter voeden. Vervolgens valt het gewassen zand terug op de top van het zandbed in een hoek van 30 graden, gelijk aan de natuurlijke helling.
