Als gevolg hiervan bewegen de zandkorrels in het filterbed naar beneden met een typische snelheid tussen 3 en 16 mm per minuut.  Deze beweging noemen we de zandomloopsnelheid. Hierin verschilt het continu filter van een batchgewijs gewassen zandfilter.<\/span><\/p><p>De omloopsnelheid van het zand blijkt van groot belang te zijn voor de filtratie-effici\u00ebntie. Twee verschijnselen moeten in dit verband worden begrepen:<\/p><ol><li>Een lagere zandomloopsnelheid houdt in dat het langer duurt voordat het filtermateriaal van boven naar beneden is verplaatst. De omlooptijd wordt gedefinieerd als de tijd tussen twee doorgangen van het wassysteem. Indien de zandcirculatiesnelheid bijvoorbeeld 10 mm per minuut bedraagt en het filterbed 2 meter hoog is, bedraagt de omlooptijd 3 uur en 20 minuten. Hoe lager de zandcirculatiesnelheid, hoe hoger de omlooptijd. Dit betekent dat vaste stoffen dieper in het filterbed zullen infiltreren. De hoeveelheid vaste stoffen die in de pori\u00ebn van het filterbed aanwezig is, zal toenemen. Het filtermechanisme zal verbeteren omdat \"vuil vuil vangt\".<\/li><li>Filterkorrels die in een continufilter naar beneden bewegen, hebben de neiging te roteren, zoals is ontdekt door live endoscopische opnamen binnenin het filterbed. Door deze roterende bewegingscomponent komt een deel van de vaste stof vrij die al in de pori\u00ebn was gevangen. Dit verschijnsel is meer uitgesproken bij hogere zandcirculatiesnelheden. Dit heeft tot gevolg dat de kwaliteit van het filtraat negatief wordt be\u00efnvloed bij hogere zandcirculatiesnelheden.<\/li><\/ol><p style=\"text-align: justify; tab-stops: 35.45pt 49.65pt;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p>Veldonderzoek met voedingswater met een zeer laag gehalte aan vaste stoffen en een lage troebelheid werd uitgevoerd om dit mechanisme te bevestigen. In figuur 1 zijn continue filterprestatiegegevens verzameld met voedingswater uit een oppervlaktewaterreservoir, laag in vaste stoffen en troebelheid. Het gebruikte filtermedium is filterzand met een gradi\u00ebnt van 0,8 - 1,25 mm. De filterbedhoogte is 2 meter en het filter werkt met een filtratiesnelheid van 8 m\/u.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>In de figuur wordt de zandcirculatie afgezet tegen de filterprestaties voor twee bedrijfsomstandigheden:<\/p><ul><li>de rode lijn toont de resultaten van gewone filtratie, zonder toevoeging van een coagulans;<\/li><li>de blauwe lijn toont de resultaten van filtratie versterkt door een coagulantdosering van 4 mg\/l ijzer in de toevoer naar het filter.<\/li><\/ul><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>In beide gevallen is het effect duidelijk zichtbaar, hoewel het effect minder uitgesproken is in het geval van een dosering van coagulanten.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>Een laatste belangrijke opmerking: pas nooit een zandcirculatie toe die lager is dan de minimaal vereiste hoeveelheid. De zandcirculatie moet hoog genoeg zijn om de vaste stoffen die met het voedingswater binnenkomen in evenwicht te houden met de vaste stoffen die met het waswater worden weggespoeld.<\/p><p>Indien de zandcirculatiesnelheid te laag wordt gekozen, zal dit evenwicht niet worden bereikt en als gevolg daarvan zal de weerstand van het filterbed gaan toenemen. Dit zal uiteindelijk leiden tot een doorbraak van vaste stoffen in het filtraat.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>Samenvattend: door de zandcirculatiesnelheid te optimaliseren kunt u hogere filterprestaties bereiken, zoals ge\u00efllustreerd in de praktijkexperimenten.
