Tertiary filter refurbishment work completed at Great Glen STW, UK

UK water utility Severn Trent is optimizing waste water treatment plants for further P removal. As
part of this scheme the existing tertiary filter plant at Great Glen STW, constructed in 2018, was
refurbished. Also the process set-up has been altered to optimize filter operations at varying process
conditions. The work has been executed by Brightwork in close collaboration with MMB and
AlphaPlus.

The project goal is to remove phosphorus by inline tertiary dosing of coagulant, and meet the more
stringent criteria for P and Fe in the final effluent. Operational conditions had to be adjusted and vital
filter internal components were redesigned and replaced. With the aim to facilitate the smooth
functioning of the filter plant. Remote Sand-Cycle monitoring has been implemented to safeguard
filter performance and to assist Severn Trent in the day-to-day operations.
