Our research to remove micropollutants, such as medicine residues, and phosphorus in one reactor, has been picked by the Dutch radio broadcasting RTV Drenthe. I a short interview the backgrounds and drivers of the research are discussed. The pilot unit, consisting of a biologically enhanced granular activated carbon filter reactor, is in full operation at WwTW Emmen, the Netherlands. Regular samples are taken to determine the removal efficiencies for a large number of medicine residues. A pilot plant has been started at the waste water treatment plant of Emmen, Waterschap Vechtstromen. This pilot study, called Bio-GAK, aims to find an affordable and sustainable solution for removing micropollutants from treated wastewater before the water is discharged into surface water. This method removes both medicine residues and phosphate.   Bio-GAK pilot The purification technique applied is using granular activated carbon filter media. This year’s EWWM (European Wastewater Management) conference is scheduled for July 12th and July 13th at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole, UK.
